The Tao of Cycling

Cycling offers the most energy efficient and pollution-free form of transport known to humans. In Australia the smallest group of cyclists is the relaxed commuters, mainly women, cycling around their neighbourhood on various errands, shopping and going to work. This group dominate cycling in the Netherlands and other cycling countries, and have the greatest growth potential for Australian cycling. Diane Kraal and Alex Merory present their experience of relaxed commuting by bicycle: one beginner-cyclist commuter and the other experienced. This will be followed by an audience and panel discussion with Frank Fisher and Elliot Fishman. Presenters
MC John Merory
Diane Kraal cycles to Heidelberg Station to go to the city. Starting just a few months ago, she now loves her journey, and has no difficulty cycling up the hill. She has a background in accounting, tax, history and conservation and is a very active member of Riverland Conservation Society. Among her publications is an analysis of the environmentally perverse tax incentives for car travel.
Alex Merory has degrees in humanities and in software engineering from Melbourne University. She is working in new media strategy for Greenpeace International. She lived in Amsterdam for 5 years and developed the habit of cycling as her default mode of transport, which she continues in Melbourne.
