The First Wave
The Carteret Islands, located just north of Papua-New Guinea, are threatened by the sea surrounding them: climate change has caused sea levels to rise steadily. With the islands slowly disappearing beneath the waves, the islanders' traditional life is no longer sustainable as their gardens are flooded by sea water. The islanders, faced with having to leave their homes and their culture behind, are the first wave of climate change refugees, but they won't be the last. What is our responsibility to these people and what is their fate to be?
